Cruise Baltic - Copenhagen

Overview

This beautiful Danish capital is dominated by canals, lakes and the sea as a reminder of the town’s heritage as a major Baltic port. Cruise ships dock either at the Freeport Terminal or at Langelinie pier, centrally located within walking distance of the famous Little Mermaid and the city centre, in which a range of cafes, outlets and a dedicated cruise information centre can be located.

Kings and Tsars

As the town is easy to get around and small enough for the attractions to be closer together, Copenhagen offers an ideal opportunity to stretch your legs either on foot or bicycle. Adjacent to Langelinie pier, there is the old military fortification of Kastellet to start the day with, or if you prefer to sit back and relax whilst learning about the history of the city there are regular canal boat tours, lasting around 50 minutes with multilingual tour guides.

Modern Architecture & Design

The historic experiences offered by Copenhagen’s past are complemented by spectacular modern gems of architecture that you can easily explore on your own. A sensational sight such as the Black Diamond, a stunning extension of the Royal Library, is just one of the many examples of grand design in the city. The Danish Design Centre, located directly across from the Tivoli Gardens, is a great way to experience most of it in a short period of time.

City Life and Outdoor Activities

For adults and children, the Tivoli Gardens offer nothing but adventure, from fun-rides, cafes and open air concerts. At night the grounds and lake are lit up with beautiful lanterns, offering a romantic atmosphere.
For both locals and tourists the temptation of taking a dip in the capital’s harbour is too great as Copenhagen’s waters are unbelievably clean and refreshing. Towards the end of June one of the greatest summer highlights is held, when the Danes celebrate midsummer, the longest day of the year. Bonfires are lit in parks, waterfronts and along the coast, and people picnic out to experience the long summer days with the entire family.
And more importantly for the adults, at the Carlsberg Brewery Visitor Centre free self guided yours provide the low-down on the history of Danish beer, capped off with a sampling of the present-day product.

Great Shopping & Fine Food

Copenhagen offers the world’s longest network of pedestrian and shopping streets and squares, from designer shops and brands along Strøget, to quaint little boutiques in the narrow side streets. Shopping whilst strolling is a fantastic way to combine Copenhagen’s experiences. And what better way to finish off a round of shopping than with one of Denmark’s famous open-faced sandwiches and a coffee in one of the many cafes Copenhagen has to offer.

Ancient and Modern

At Copenhagen’s National Museum, you can follow the history of the Danes from the rune stones of the Vikings to the present day. The exhibitions depict everyday life and special occasions throughout the ages in Denmark, and also feature the many and varied lifestyles witnessed throughout the last 900 years.
The Open-Air Museum just outside Copenhagen is an open area built up with replicas of ancient houses and tools, and a great way to walk through history from the Stone Age onward, and a short trip west can take you in the footsteps of the Vikings in the former capital Roskilde, where a tour of the Cathedral and the Viking Ship Museum is a must.
