Cruise Baltic - Elsinore

Overview

Elsinore/Helsingborg – two countries in one destination! The twin towns of Elsinore in Denmark and Helsingborg in neighbouring Sweden face each other across the straits of the Öresund at the narrowest point and mark the gateway to the Baltic sea. This area offers a range of attractions with a mixture of culture, history, nature and the arts.

Kings and Tsars

Both the Swedish and Danish Royal Families have a long history of summer residences in the region that can be visited today. An excellent example of a Renaissance castle is Kronborg, immortalised by William Shakespeare’s play Hamlet. Walk through the Chapel and the Knight’s Hall, the longest room in northern Europe, and find it easy to understand why the playwright chose Kronborg as the setting of his famous play.
The summer residence of the present Danish Royal Family is west of Elsinore at Fredensborg Castle, which has an interesting statue park and pleasant baroque park. During July you can visit the Orangery and the Chapel, as well as the normally private Reserved Garden.

Modern Design and Architecture

You are in the middle of the ceramics region when you visit Elsinore/Helsingborg, and here the clay is shaped and sculpted into traditional pots and fine art by the region’s leading ceramicists. You can meet glass artists, painters, textiles artists and others in their studios.
The latest contribution to modern architecture can be found in Helsingborg, where the Dunker Culture Centre and the new marina have given the city an exciting waterfront.

City Life and Outdoor Activities

Ready for some exercise?
A wonderful way to spend the day is to discover Ven island by bike, or enjoy the activity that is a favourite amongst both locals and tourists – deep-sea fishing! Sandy beaches are within walking distance from downtown Elsinore/Helsingborg for a lovely summer walk in the sun. Or take a guided tour of the botanical gardens of Fredriksdal Museum and Gardens and follow in the footsteps of the famous botanist Carl Linneaus.

Great Shopping and Fine Food

Shopping in Elsinore/Helsingborg is easy and enjoyable, as in the town centres the pedestrian streets are lined with boutiques, stores and cozy cafes to create a relaxed atmosphere. As well as a wide range of clothes and footwear, be sure to look out for ceramics, glass and crystal art.
Shop in two countries in the same day with markets offering international produce, and finish the day of shopping off with divine cuisine in on of the many restaurants along Helsingborg’s popular marina run by famous top chefs!
Or enjoy a meal on the ferry across the Öresund while you travel back and forth as many times as you like. Just remember to make sure you are at the right port when you finally want to disembark!
Ancient & Modern
Elsinore and Helsingborg shared a common Danish history until 1658. The similarities and the differences between the cities today are thrilling; beautifully preserved Renaissance houses in downtown Elsinore contrasts the modern architecture of Helsingborg’s new marina. Trace history by visiting the Karnan tower, the only remains of Helsingborg Castle dating from the Middle Ages, and St. Mary’s Church from the same period.
In the middle of Öresund is the beautiful island of Ven, where the famous astronomer Tycho Brahe lived in the late 16th century. Visit the heritage that houses the remains of his observatory and its Renaissance garden. The museum depicts his life and scientific significance; complete with reconstructions of the astronomical instruments he developed. A journey back in history, science and nature.
