Cruise Baltic - Gothenburg

Overview

This is a wonderfully vibrant city with something for everybody from shopping and sampling the culinary delights to visit the various theatres, and museums. As Sweden’s second largest city Göteborg is a city of delights and entertainment, with beautiful landscapes and quaint nearby fishing villages.
Göteborg’s deep natural harbour is only minutes from downtown, allowing cruise ship passengers easy access to everything the city has to offer. The port facilities – the biggest in Scandinavia – cater for around 6,000 passengers daily.

Kings and Tsars

The East India Company established offices in Göteborg, bringing wealth to the region. Göteborg has been welcoming travellers for centuries – a tradition that continues to this day.

During the late 1800s King Oscar II scandalised Göteborg with his playboy antics when he moved his mistresses into some of the most fashionable addresses in town. He was a keen sailor, and today sailing and leisure activities still attract tourists to Göteborg from around the world.

Modern Architecture and Design
The city was designed by the Dutch with a series of canals similar to Amsterdam, originally as a fortification against Danish attack. The strong Dutch and English influence on Swedish architecture has created a unique environment in Göteborg.
With striking architectural gems such as the super modern Göteborg Opera and art deco concert hall and art museum, you can clearly see the Swedish love of modern design is never far away in Göteborg. Theses buildings create a counterpoint to the city’s historical and traditional architecture. For design buffs the Röhsska National Design Museum offers a unique look at furniture and industrial design through the 20th century to the present day. Shop for the latest in Swedish design in the many designer goods stores the city has to offer.

City Living and Outdoor Activities
Although it is small in size, the city certainly is not short of activities for all sorts of people to enjoy. With a thriving live music scene, Göteborg has a number of vibrant jazz and rock music venues. Göteborg is also widely acknowledged to be the home of metal music.
There are the centrally located parks and nature walks make it easy to get away from the urban bustle and relax in magical forests. In the spacious gardens of Slottskogen Park, located in downtown Göteborg, there is even a zoo with Scandinavian animals such as moose, reindeer, seals and many others.

Great Shopping and Fine Food
No visit to Göteborg is complete without enjoying the city’s great shopping opportunities. In addition to designer shops, there is the Antik Hallen for antique finds and a multitude of shops specializing in everything from designer clothes to speciality Swedish handicrafts.
