Cruise Baltic - Kalmar

Overview

Kalmar, Orrefors and Öland are three destinations that offer a unique landscape and a rich historical heritage, where everything is so close by you can walk and experience travelling with all your senses.

Kings and Tsars

Once the centre of power, politics and elegance in Sweden, Kalmar still holds traces of the noble days, offering a unique atmosphere to visitors. The symbol of royal power is, of course, the castles. The magnificent Kalmar Castle, with its fantastic downtown location close to the historically and culturally rich Old Town, is Scandinavia’s best-preserved Renaissance palace.

If touring to the island of Öland, a visit to the Palace of Solliden is an absolute must. The Italian-style white palace still serves as the summer residence of the Swedish royal family. The celebration of Crown Princess Victoria’s birthday, July 14, is always held on Öland, with celebrities lending even greater brilliance to the occasion.

Modern Architecture and Design

The newest part of Kalmar, Varvsholmen, is within walking distance from the docking quay, and what was formally a shipyard is now a mixture of offices and residential buildings. The world famous Orrefors glassworks are created by such designers as Erika Lagerbielke and Martti Rytkönen. You can visit the Kingdom of Crystal by bus and experience the heat from the glass ovens as the craftsmen do their work. You can then stop in the factory outlet where there are many other glass artworks to discover, as well as paying a visit to the International Design Centre.

City Life and Outdoor Activities

Get acquainted with the soul of Kalmar with the help of the unique architectural details, facades and well preserved buildings. Take a stroll and meet the locals in the many cafes and restaurants Kalmar has to offer. There are great opportunities in the Kalmar region for outdoor activities such as golf, canoeing, and bird watching for those seeking a more peaceful past time.
The island of Öland is famous for its unique landscape and exceptional flora and fauna. The southern part of the island was recently designated a World Heritage Site by UNESCO. If you do end up going for a tour here, you may find some wildlife and plants never to be found anywhere in the world.
The Midsummer celebration is one of the most traditional happenings, and it begins at the end of June. The maypole is raised and people dress up in national costumes and dance to Swedish folk music. In July the Medieval Festival takes place in Salvestaden. This reconstruction of the medieval city of Kalmar allows you and your family to experience its history with all your senses.

Great Shopping and Fine Food

Kalmar offers a lot to the keen shopper, with the help of the vibrant downtown shopping streets making access to the popular brands a lot easier. There is a great variety of boutiques and specialists shops, so you will never be short of places to go. Visiting the island of Öland by car or on a guided bus tour, stop at one of the purveyors to H.M. the King. Paradisverstaden is an experience for anyone interested in fine quality and Scandinavian design. Enjoy glass and ceramics in a very pleasant atmosphere surrounded by a beautiful garden.
And for those who need a break you have the choice of several restaurants, many of which have received awards for their gourmet cuisine using premium local produce, and enjoy a relaxed atmosphere before heading out for more adventure.

Ancient and Modern

Kalmar has received the Europa Nostra award twice, thanks to its well preserved historical surroundings, and it is a perfect example of how relics from the past can blend with a modern environment. If you would like to see Kalmar on your own, it is easy to discover the city’s rich historical heritage with its impressive city wall, imposing buildings, picturesque stone-built houses and cobblestone streets. In the main square you will find Sweden’s finest baroque church and the beautiful Town Hall.
You must not miss cosy café Kullzénska serving various pies and biscuits. Or if you are looking for a more contemporary atmosphere, sit back and enjoy a Swedish pastry at one of the more modern cafes.
Go and discover the royal warship Kronan, one of Sweden’s largest warships, which exploded and sank in 1686. More than 25,000 finds are now on display at the exhibition, including several cannons and Sweden’s largest gold coin discovery.
