Cruise Baltic - Oslo

Overview

Oslo is one of the oldest Nordic capitals and has a 1,000 year old history. Situated at the head of one Norway’s most beautiful fjords, it is surrounded by islands and forest hills.

Oslo is looked on as one of the safest places for trade, industry and cultural enrichment, from the time of the Vikings up to the present day. Today Oslo is the nation’s financial, political and cultural centre and is home to 525,000 people.
From the port you can see the City Hall facing Oslo fjord and, in the distant hills surrounding Oslo, the famous Holmenkollen ski jump. Visit the many museums that Oslo has to offer such as the Museum of Cultural History, the Viking Ship Museum, and the Norwegian Maritime Museum. As well as the museums, don’t miss visiting the Vigeland sculpture park and the National Gallery.

Modern Architecture & Design
Over the next few years, Oslo will undergo the most significant changes seen in the city for decades, as the entire dockside will be developed and made accessible to both locals and tourists. There will be developments in new housing, commercial areas, recreational areas, museums, cultural buildings and a new opera house.

City Life and Outdoor Events
With a varied cultural and natural landscape, with interesting buildings and beautiful parks, Oslo is an ideal city for sightseeing tours. Surrounded by the fjord and the forest, the capital is set in a beautiful location, with sightseeing operators offering boat tours, as well as tours by bus or on foot.
Visit the Holmenkollen ski jump and downtown Oslo with its charming narrow streets and interesting museums. As well as being home to the Vikings, Edvard Munch, Henrik Ibsen and interesting culture, Olso is also great place for sailing, fishing and swimming. You can spend hours exploring, cycling or on foot.

Great Shopping and Fine Food
Oslo is a shopper’s paradise; a town where you can find everything you are looking for, ranging from clothes and designer goods. These have become and increasing trademark for Oslo, and you can find them in the many interesting shops the town has to offer. In addition to quaint shops and exclusive boutiques, there are department stores, markets, and antique stores. Norway is known for its traditional specialties based on local ingredients such as fish and seafood, particularly salmon, cod, herring and shrimp. Mutton, moose and reindeer prepared in various ways also make for an out-of-the-ordinary dining experience.
The culinary traditions are strong and Norwegian chefs have a good international reputation, having won a number of awards. Many of these chefs work in some of Oslo’s excellent restaurants, five of which have received much sought after Michelin star ratings.

Ancient and Modern

The cruise vessels dock in a great location in downtown Oslo, right below the Akershus Fortress, where it is highly recommended to start your tour of Olso, and dates back to 1229. It is very easy to get around downtown Oslo, and it is not very big, and the large number of parks gives it a very green feel. A walk along the quay takes you to Aker Brygge with its wide selection of shops and restaurants, which is always full of life, especially in the summer. Don’t miss the Nobel Peace Centre nearby.
