City
Life and Outdoor Activities
Rønne is the capital of Bornholm and the town square
is a lively centre where people gather in cafes, round the fountain
and the sculpture to socialise and create a friendly atmosphere.
Downtown is home to a range of shops and cafes, with a wide range
of specialist shops for jewellery, books, gifts, hardware etc.
Beyond the city centre Bornholm offers excellent opportunities
for those who wish to cycle and take a walk through the rocky
terrain. From sandy beaches and rugged coastline to beautiful
landscapes and forest interior, there is something or everybody
to enjoy. For sport lovers, there are four golf courses, and the
opportunity to go sailing offshore, which gives an exciting new
perspective of the landmark sites of Bornholm, including the castle
ruins of Hammershus on the North-West coast.
Great Shopping and Fine Food
Rønne has several high-quality fashion shops, with ranges
different from those found in major city centres. You could get
an evening gown made out silk for that very special occasion,
and there are shops specialising in tailored children’s
clothes gaining a strong foothold on Bornholm. The island is famous
for it’s glassblower and ceramicists, and many of the workshops
are open to visitors, in which they can watch the process and
have the opportunity to buy works of art.
From fresh smoked herring served at a smokehouse to exclusive
gourmet dinners featuring local produce, Bornholm offers a bounty
of gastronomic delights. The island is also renowned for its prize-winning
cheeses, biscuits, meat products, bread and ice cream, as well
as a fantastic collection of fish specialities.
Ancient and Modern
It’s exciting to go in search of the past on Bornholm, whether
you’re interested in the genesis of the island or the traces
left by our ancestors. Geologically, Bornholm comprises granite
bedrock in the north of the island, formed around 1.7 billion
years ago, and sandstone in the south, which is only around 500
million years old.
The most fascinating traces left by the people of the Bronze Age
on Bornholm are the many carvings cut into the rocks and cliff
faces. They are thought to have had a religious significance,
but as yet not much is known about them. You will find the best
examples in the north of the island. In the past, the island’s
central location in the Baltic made it an important intersection
for trade routes throughout the Baltic Region.
