Overview
Welcome to a city full of culture, with its own unique blend of vitality, style and creativity, beauty and tradition. Built on 14 islands where Lake Mälaren flows out into the Baltic Sea, Stockholm boasts one of Europe’s largest and best-preserved medieval city centres. The Swedish capital is an open, clean, and welcoming city where you can easily walk between a wide range of sights and destinations right from the quay.

Kings and Tsars
Gamla Stan – Old Town – is a medieval island in the centre of the city, and home to the Royal Palace, several beautiful churches, narrow picturesque streets, and an abundance of shops, restaurants and cafés, all within easy reach of the quay. Sweden has been a monarchy for 1000 years, and Stockholm has been a seat of Royal power for centuries. The Royal palace complex, with museums such as the Royal Treasury and Royal Armoury, offers a great insight into the regal heritage first hand. For history lovers, there is a guided tour of the city offered in many different languages.
The city and surroundings are rich with royal heritage as well. Parks, gardens and palaces such as Drottningholm Palace – the residence of the Royal Family and a UNESCO World Heritage site – are open to the public.

Modern Architecture & Design
Expect smooth sailing in Stockholm, thanks to its high-tech, modern infrastructure and convenient, efficient transportation. A lot of the quays are situated within walking distance of the city centre. Take a journey through the world’s longest art gallery - the Stockholm subway, a clean and colourful mode of public transportation with over 90 stations uniquely decorated by national artists – en route to the city’s many museums.
With its exhibit showcasing Swedish design by decade, you should pay a visit to the National Museum, or perhaps the Moderna Museum of contemporary art, also the site of the annual outdoor International Jazz Festival.

City Life and Outdoor Activities
Before you even reach Stockholm you can enjoy a vision of extraordinary beauty by sailing by the magnificent landscape of its archipelago and the magical world of more than 24,000 islands, then to arrive right into the port of Stockholm. Midsummer in late June is an important holiday that welcomes the arrival of summer with dancing around the maypole, games, festivities, and traditional meals with herring, schnapps, and song.
During August you can enjoy exotic crayfish parties underneath fanciful lanterns that light up the silky late summer evenings. No matter when you come to Stockholm, you can learn about the traditions and even participate at Skansen, an open-air museum presenting historical Sweden in a park-like setting.

Great Shopping and Fine Food
There is so much variety in the quaint little streets of old town, just a few short minutes away from the city centre, with the cosy little souvenir shops adding character to the cobblestone streets. If your passion is high fashion and well-known designers, you’ll love the area known as Östermalm. For easy one-stop shopping, try the cosmopolitan department stores such as NK, Åhléns or the indoor Gallerian mall. Drottninggatan is an outdoor pedestrian mall that connects the Old Town with the more modern heart of the city, a wonderful stroll with a variety of shops and boutiques.
Stockholm is home to a very lively dining scene, and has seen an ever richer culinary expansion in recent years. Restaurants serving traditional Swedish fare flourish alongside internationally renowned, cutting-edge cuisine. Their numbers continue to grow, giving you the enviable task of selecting how and where you’d like to dine. If you want a real taste of Sweden, sample the Arctic raspberries and cloudberries that have been ripened under the midnight sun. Add salmon, halibut, turbot, or any other fish from ice-cold waters to your list of musts, too.

Ancient and Modern
It is easy and fun to get around Stockholm’s 14 islands. Take a ferry or water taxi to the Royal Djurgården, an island consisting mainly of parkland with enough to see to keep visitors busy for several days. Another popular attraction is the Vasa Museum, featuring the Vasa warship that sank on her maiden voyage in 1628.

Long before Stockholm was founded, the area where Lake Mälaren meets the Baltic Sea was a lively region of Viking commerce. Today the many rune stones in the Stockholm surroundings bear evidence of the Viking Age and its people. A visit to the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Birka, a true Viking settlement, gives a picture of our ancient past.
